The EDUGuest Directory is a platform that schools can utilize to organize and track the various individuals from outside of the school (EDUGuests) who support teachers and students in and out of the classroom.
Examples of supporting individuals include: guest speakers, artists in residence, activist in residence, story tellers, performers, alumni and external coaches.
These individuals are usually identified due to a personal or professional relationship with a member of the school community. Often the individuals contributions are not known to the entire school staff and the connection to the school is often lost when the key member of the school community leaves the school.
The primary goal of the directory is to provide a place where information about these individuals can be recorded for the benefit of all staff and especially new staff. Information about area(s) of expertise, contact information, availability as well as reviews and comments from teachers will also be available for viewing.
The directory will be populated by information collected via a Google Form. This information will be stored in a Google sheet and Awesome Table will be used to create the directory. These tools are user friendly and the entire process will be easy to replicate by other individuals.
How did this project get started?
It all started when a teacher at my school asked me if I knew anyone who could lend some expertise in his architecture & design class. Fortunately, I did know someone but it made me think, "what if I didn't know anyone"? I thought it would be beneficial if teachers at my school had a resource of some kind that they could access. Unfortunately, they didn't.
This "problem" was the centrepiece of my Sydney 2019 (#SYD19) Google Innovator application. Below you can view my 60 second application video.
There are a number of sites/platforms available online such as Skype in the Classroom, Digital Human Library, VROC.ca, Nepris.com and Exploring by the Seat of your Pants.
The EDUGuest Directory is different from the above platforms in the following ways:
- A specific account (i.e Google or Microsoft) will not be required to join/signup/access
- Teachers and administrators will initiate the addition of members to the directory; people will not be able to join on their own
EDUGuests can join classes in a variety of ways including face to face interactions, video conferencing and virtual connections (Twitter chat, closed group chat, email etc.).
There is potential for these individuals to be added to a regional or global directory at a later date if the directory evolves into a regional/global one.
